Appointed Person Training (NPORS N401) Training Course

Duration: 1-5 Day(s)

Certificate: NPORS N401 Appointed Person card

Location: Nationwide

Course Overview

This NPORS-accredited Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) – N401 course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to plan, organise and manage lifting operations safely and effectively.

Delivered in line with BS7121 and LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998), the course covers everything from risk assessment and method statement development to crane selection, lift planning, and communication with lifting teams.

Training is delivered on your site using your own plant and lifting equipment, allowing candidates to apply learning directly to their working environment. On successful completion, learners will receive an NPORS N401 Appointed Person card – recognised across the UK construction and industrial sectors.

Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at individuals who are, or will be, responsible for planning and overseeing lifting operations, including:

  • Site managers, supervisors and lifting coordinators

  • Experienced crane operators or slinger/signallers progressing into planning roles

  • Appointed Persons under LOLER & BS7121 requirements

  • Anyone involved in complex or contract lift planning

Course Durations & Structure

How long the course takes depends on your experience and current role. Choose the option below that best fits your background.

This is the full Appointed Person (Lifting Operations) training programme for candidates with little or no prior experience in planning or supervising lifting operations.

This option is suitable for those who have prior knowledge or experience of lifting operations — such as working as a Crane Supervisor (N405), Slinger/Signaller (N402), or similar role — and are now moving into an appointed person position.

This option is for those who already hold an NPORS Appointed Person (N401) qualification and need to renew or revalidate their card.

  • 1-day refresher is suitable where the candidate can demonstrate ongoing competence, supported by recent experience and evidence of regular involvement in lifting operations.

  • 2-day refresher is recommended where the candidate has not been actively involved in lift planning for 12+ months, or where significant changes in standards or legislation have occurred since their last training.

My experience with TL training has been fantastic, my first visit was to complete a refresher course on a counterbalance and my second visit was a 2 week RTITB instructor course with Ian Tedd, the place has a really relaxed but safe training environment, and occasionally the director Trev would make time to pop in and check in, fantastic outfit and well run by all involved, couldn’t recommend a better place for all your training needs. Thanks again TL training

Excellent instructors and great training site. Had the pleasure of doing my novice FLT course with Gwynn, who was very patient with me and the two other people on the course, he gave us all the information we needed to pass first time, great banter too. One of the best instructors I've received training from. Recommend this place to anyone looking for the training they offer.

Recently undertook my Forklift training with ‘TL Training’. J.S was our instructor for the duration of the 4 day course, who’s highly knowledgeable and was happy to answer any questions or issue we had regarding the training. The course given was excellent and j.s was highly approachable all week. I Would massively recommend anyone to come to TL Training who has a course/training programme that they need to complete.
