Course Overview

The NPORS Slinger/Signaller (N402) course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely attach, guide, and direct loads during lifting operations in accordance with NPORS, LOLER, PUWER, and BS7121 standards.

This course ensures candidates understand their role as part of the lifting team — including communication, signalling, load control, and working under the direction of the crane operator and Appointed Person.

Training is delivered at your site, using your own lifting equipment, ensuring relevance to your workplace, lifting plans, and safety procedures.

Successful learners will receive an NPORS N402 Slinger/Signaller card, a nationally recognised qualification required for many construction, lifting, and industrial roles.

Course Durations & Structure

How long the course takes depends on your experience and current role. Choose the option below that best fits your background.

Comprehensive training covering all aspects of lifting operations, signalling, and safe working practices.

For candidates with practical experience in lifting operations but without formal certification. Includes a review of theory and hands-on practical assessment.

For current or recently expired NPORS Slinger/Signaller (N402) cardholders or equivalent qualification. Includes theory revision and assessment to confirm ongoing competence.

Entry Requirements

To ensure the course runs safely and effectively, all delegates must meet the minimum physical and occupational standards required under NPORS and BS7121 guidelines.

  • Be aged 18 or over on the first day of training.

  • Have basic literacy and numeracy skills to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

  • Be physically fit, in good general health, and capable of safely completing all practical elements of the training and assessment.

  • Learners should not suffer from medical conditions that could affect their ability to participate safely, such as:

    • Impaired eyesight or hearing

    • Heart disease or high blood pressure

    • Epilepsy or impaired limb function

    • Alcohol or drug dependence

    • Psychiatric illness or similar health concerns

  • Meet all general prerequisites (aged 18+, physically fit, medically suitable).

  • Have basic literacy and numeracy skills in English.

  • Be able to participate fully in practical exercises and group discussions.

  • No prior experience required.

  • Meet all general prerequisites.

  • Have previous hands-on experience assisting in lifting operations.

  • Provide evidence of practical experience, such as:

    • Employer reference or lift supervision record

    • Site logbook or prior in-house training record

  • Understand basic lifting terminology, load handling, and site communication.

  • Hold a current or recently expired NPORS N402 or equivalent qualification.

  • Provide evidence of recent practical involvement in slinging or signalling operations.

  • Meet all general prerequisites.

  • Be capable of demonstrating competent signalling and load control techniques.

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand load balance, centre of gravity, and stability principles.

  • Direct and control crane movements and load travel safely.

  • Maintain clear and safe working zones throughout lifting operations.

The NPORS Slinger/Signaller (N402) course includes:

  • Legislation: HASAWA, LOLER, PUWER, and BS7121

  • Roles and responsibilities of the lifting team (Appointed Person, Crane Operator, Slinger/Signaller)
