You will learn the following:
1) Introductions & aims
• Why fire safety matters for everyone
• Course goals, housekeeping, participation
2) Legal basics & responsibilities
• Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 — duty of the Responsible Person & staff cooperation
• Your role as an employee: reporting, following procedures, raising concerns
Outcome: Understand what the law expects of everyday staff.
3) Fire science & how fires spread
• Fire triangle; ignition sources in typical workplaces
• Spread: convection, conduction, radiation; smoke hazards
• Classes of fire (A, B, C, D, F, electrical) at awareness level
Outcome: Recognise how fires start/spread and why controls matter.
4) Common hazards & simple controls
• Housekeeping, waste & storage; keeping routes clear
• Electrical risks (overloading, damaged leads, battery devices)
• Kitchens & microwaves; hot works/contractors (awareness)
• Smoking/vaping areas; arson risk reduction; flammables basics
Outcome: Spot everyday hazards and apply simple, proportionate controls.
5) Fire protection measures
• Active systems: alarms, manual call points, detectors (user awareness)
• Passive systems: fire doors (use & daily checks), compartments, signage
• Emergency lighting & assembly points (what staff need to know)
Outcome: Know what systems exist and how to use them correctly day-to-day.
6) Actions on discovering a fire / on hearing the alarm
• Raise the alarm, call procedures, safe priorities
• Evacuation basics: routes, assembly, roll call (or sign-in systems)
• Assisting visitors & colleagues; awareness of PEEPs (not writing them)
• What not to do (re-entry, lifts, door wedging, ad-hoc heroics)
Outcome: Follow the site procedure confidently and safely.
7) Extinguishers: awareness & safe decision-making
• Types & colour codes: water, foam, CO₂, powder, wet chemical (what they’re for)
• PASS technique (Pull – Aim – Squeeze – Sweep) at demo level
• When not to attempt firefighting; prioritising evacuation
Demo: Trainer demonstration or inert units (venue permitting)
Outcome: Make safe choices about extinguisher use in early, minor incidents.
8) Checks, reporting & drills
• Your part in weekly checks (not technical maintenance): call points, doors held open, route obstructions
• How to report faults; incident/near-miss reporting
• Drills: frequency, your role, learning from debriefs
Outcome: Contribute to routine safety and good records.
9) Scenario discussion & Q&A
• Short, workplace-relevant scenarios (office/school/warehouse/retail)
• Decisions, communication, calm leadership in an evacuation
Outcome: Apply awareness to realistic situations.
Learners will have the opportunity to take part in a hands-on extinguisher demonstration, using real water and CO₂ extinguishers under trainer supervision. This gives a realistic feel for weight, handling and operation without any risk.
We do not use live fires or naked flames, and powder or foam extinguishers are not used due to the mess and potential inhalation hazards they create.
• No previous fire training required — this course is suitable for all levels.
• Learners must be aged 16 or over.
• A good understanding of spoken English is recommended (for safety instructions and discussions).

EXCELLENT Based on 77 reviews Posted on Google Henry Ward4 August 2023Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My experience with TL training has been fantastic, my first visit was to complete a refresher course on a counterbalance and my second visit was a 2 week RTITB instructor course with Ian Tedd, the place has a really relaxed but safe training environment, and occasionally the director Trev would make time to pop in and check in, fantastic outfit and well run by all involved, couldn’t recommend a better place for all your training needs.
