Overview

The course provides qualified counterbalance operators with a skills refresh to ensure they continue to operate the counterbalance forklift truck safely and efficiently.

This course enables successful operators to use any counterbalance forklift up to a 5000 kg lifting
capacity (with authorisation) anywhere in the UK.

Who can take this course?

TL Training defines a ‘Refresher’ as somebody who has previous experience of using a counterbalance forklift truck and can provide documentary evidence of previous formal training within the UK. 

How long will it take?

It takes about 7.5 hours, over 1 day.

Course Location:

This course will take place at our training centre in Bromborough, Wirral, CH62 3NX.

What qualification do I receive?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an AITT Certificate which is valid for 3 years. After this period, the successful delegate will be required to attend another 1-day refresher course.

Additionally, candidates’ details will be uploaded to the ACORNS database, facilitating easy verification of the certificate by current or prospective employers.

What are the requirements?

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate a proficient understanding of written and spoken English. Upon arrival for training, candidates will be required to present photographic identification to verify their identity along with evidence of their previous formal training (certificate).

How long is my certificate valid?

Your certificate remains valid for 3 years. After this period, you’ll need to attend a 1-day course to refresh your knowledge and stay updated on any new or amended legislation.

How many additional participants will be joining the course alongside me?

Courses are capped at a maximum of 3 candidates per instructor, guaranteeing ample one-to-one interaction with our instructors. Additionally, candidates benefit from observing and learning from their peers, fostering skill development within the group.

Will there be a test at the conclusion of the course?

Yes, candidates will need to complete both a written theory test and a practical skills test as components of the course.

What is covered during the course?

  1. Introduction to Counterbalance Forklifts: Overview of the basic components, controls, and functions of counterbalance forklift trucks.

  2. Safety Procedures and Regulations: Understanding relevant health and safety regulations, including safe operating practices, hazard identification, and risk assessment.

  3. Pre-Operational Checks: Instruction on conducting pre-use checks and inspections to ensure the forklift is in safe working condition.

  4. Operating Techniques: Hands-on training in manoeuvring, lifting, stacking, and placing loads using the counterbalance forklift.

  5. Load Handling: Proper techniques for loading and unloading various types of materials, including pallets, crates, and other loads.

  6. Workplace scenario Training: Familiarisation with common workplace environments, including navigation through confined spaces, ramps, and other obstacles.

  7. Emergency Procedures: Procedures for responding to emergencies, such as accidents, equipment malfunctions, and evacuations.

  8. Theory and Written Assessments: Classroom instruction on relevant theoretical concepts, followed by assessments to evaluate understanding and knowledge retention.

  9. Practical Assessments: Practical demonstrations and assessments to evaluate competency in operating the counterbalance forklift safely and efficiently.
