Course Overview

Gain the foundational skills to recognise early signs of mental distress in people around you, open a supportive conversation, and guide them toward appropriate help. This Level 1 Mental Health First Aid course teaches a practical, compassionate approach to mental health first response.

Through interactive sessions, you’ll learn the risk and protective factors for mental health, how to safely approach a person in distress, and how to listen nonjudgmentally while supporting them until professional help is in place.

On success, you’ll receive a  Level 1 Certificate in Mental Health First Aid Awareness, valid for 3 years.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand common mental health issues (anxiety, depression, stress)

  • Recognise early warning signs and risk factors

  • Start a nonjudgmental conversation and listen with empathy

  • Use a basic mental health first aid action plan

  • Know when and how to refer someone to professional support

Here’s what will be covered (interactive, instructor-led, with discussion):

  • Introduction to mental health and mental wellness

  • The mental health continuum: from well-being to crisis

  • Common conditions / issues: anxiety, depression, stress, substance misuse

  • Risk factors, protective factors & stigma

  • Listening skills: asking open questions, nonverbal communication, empathy

  • Basic mental health first aid action plan (e.g. ALGEE or equivalent model)

  • Crisis situations: identifying suicidal thoughts, immediate support strategies

  • Self-care and boundaries for the helper

  • Practice role-play scenarios & group debrief

  • Instructor-led training with supportive facilitation

  • TL Training registration and certificate of completion

  • Learner resources: handbook, quick reference cards, support signposting guides

  • Scenario and role-play materials

  • Coffee / refreshments at training centre and free parking (where available)

Before booking, please ensure learners meet:

  • Age: 18+ (or 16+ with adult consent)

  • English: Able to communicate, read and complete assessments in English

  • Emotional readiness: Comfortable discussing topics like distress, self-harm, suicide

  • Attendance: Full attendance required for certification

  • Photo ID: Valid ID for registration

  • No prior qualifications required — this is an introductory course
