Asbestos Awareness Training Course

New research conducted by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that around 5,000 people die every year in the UK from asbestos caused cancers, which can develop decades after exposure. An estimated 20 tradespeople die each week as a result of previous exposure.

What Is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a term for a group of minerals made of microscopic fibres. The fibres are highly toxic. However, we were not always aware of this. Asbestos was often used in building construction for insulation, flooring and roofing and sprayed on ceilings and walls. It is common for buildings that were constructed before 2000 to still have traces of asbestos in them.

Asbestos is now banned from the UK and many other countries. However, those who may have worked with the material in the past are at risk of becoming very ill even if they have not been in contact for years and years.

The control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR) apply to employers, employees, self-employed persons and duty holders. The regulations cover all work with asbestos containing materials. Regulation 10 states that every employer must ensure that adequate information, instructions and training is given to employees who are liable to be exposed to asbestos.

Workers who may be exposed to asbestos include but are not limited to:

  • • Maintenance staff
  • • Electricians
  • • Construction workers
  • • Heating engineers
  • • Decorators/plasterers
  • • Gas fitters
  • • Demolition workers
