Swansea contains a wide range of older commercial, educational, residential, healthcare and industrial buildings. Where premises were constructed or refurbished before asbestos was prohibited, asbestos-containing materials may still be present in insulation, boards, coatings, cement products and service areas.
The greatest risk often occurs when routine work disturbs material that nobody realised could contain asbestos. Drilling, cutting, sanding or removing the wrong product can release fibres that are not visible to the naked eye.
TL Training delivers Asbestos Awareness training in Swansea for tradespeople, maintenance teams and other employees whose work could bring them into contact with asbestos-containing materials.
Who Needs Asbestos Awareness Training?
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires appropriate information, instruction and training for workers who are liable to be exposed to asbestos. Awareness training is particularly relevant to trades and maintenance roles working in older buildings.
Typical candidates include electricians, plumbers, heating engineers, joiners, decorators, roofers, demolition workers, telecommunications engineers, facilities staff, caretakers and general maintenance operatives.
The course is awareness training only. It does not qualify a person to remove, repair or otherwise work on asbestos-containing material. Employees expected to undertake asbestos work need additional task-specific training and, for some activities, a licensed contractor will be required.

What the Course Teaches
Delegates learn what asbestos is, why it was widely used, the main types historically found in buildings and the serious health conditions associated with inhaling airborne fibres.
The course examines common asbestos-containing products, including insulation board, pipe lagging, sprayed coatings, cement sheets, floor tiles, textured coatings, gaskets and fire-resistant materials. It also explains why condition and disturbance are central to risk: asbestos left intact and properly managed is very different from material being drilled or broken.
The course explains the steps to take if suspected asbestos is discovered or accidentally disturbed. Work should stop, the area should be isolated, access restricted and the incident reported through the employer’s procedures. Employees should not sweep, vacuum or attempt to clean contaminated dust using ordinary equipment.
The Duty to Manage Asbestos
Those responsible for non-domestic premises have a duty to identify and manage asbestos risks. Employees should be given access to relevant asbestos registers or survey information before intrusive work begins, but awareness training remains essential because plans can be incomplete and materials may not be obvious.
For Swansea employers using contractors, clear communication is equally important. Contractors should be told about known asbestos and should confirm what checks have been completed before starting work.

Swansea Course Delivery and Certification
Asbestos Awareness training can be delivered for groups of employees in Swansea and tailored to the kinds of buildings and tasks they encounter. Delegates who complete the course successfully receive certification confirming completion of the course.
Refresher training can be arranged at suitable intervals and whenever there is evidence that knowledge has faded, working methods have changed or an employee has failed to follow the correct procedure.
