The requirement comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the piece of legislation that governs fire safety across virtually every workplace in England and Wales. Understanding why a fire behaves as it does is what turns fire safety from a list of rules into something staff can reason about.
From there it works through the common causes of fire in workplace settings and the straightforward measures that reduce each risk, before moving on to the safety features built into buildings and the part they play in prevention, containment and evacuation.
Fire doors, alarms, signage and escape routes all become far more useful when the people relying on them know what they are for. The course also gives due weight to the dangers of smoke, which causes far more harm in most fires than flame does.
A dedicated section then introduces fire extinguishers, covering the different types and, crucially, when each one should and should not be used. The training closes on what to do if you discover a fire, walking through the risks a person needs to weigh in that moment. Learners finish with a final assessment confirming they have absorbed the material.
Which Employees Need Basic Fire Awareness Training
The honest answer is all of them. This is general awareness training designed for every employee in a business, not a specialist qualification for a handful of nominated people, and the Order’s requirement extends to all staff rather than a chosen few. Office workers, warehouse staff, retail assistants, care workers, manufacturing operatives and site teams all need to know how fire starts, how to avoid causing one and what to do when the alarm sounds.
It suits new starters as part of induction and works equally well as a refresher for longer-serving staff whose knowledge has drifted since they last thought about it. Because it is delivered online in around an hour, you can roll it out across departments and shifts without the logistics of getting everybody into a room together.
Where a business needs more than baseline awareness, further training builds on this foundation.
