The Confined Space Regulations of 1997 define a confined space as “any place, including any chamber, tank, vat, silo, pit, trench, pipe, sewer, flue, well or other similar space in which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, there arises a reasonable foreseeable specified risk”.
Each year, a number of people are killed or seriously injured when working in confined spaces. This is often due to being poorly trained, or not being provided with the correct safety equipment.
It is employer’s responsibility to ensure that they provide their staff with the appropriate training in order to minimise risks and hazards.
