The Slinger and Signaller Role
A slinger is responsible for selecting suitable lifting accessories and attaching the load correctly. A signaller communicates with the crane operator and directs movement where the operator cannot see the load or landing area clearly. On many sites, one trained person performs both functions.
The role requires judgement. The candidate must understand the weight and shape of the load, centre of gravity, lifting points, sling angles and the capacity of every accessory used. They must also maintain a safe exclusion zone and use signals that the operator understands without ambiguity.
Lifting operations are governed by the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and supported by PUWER 1998. Equipment must be suitable and examined, while lifting must be properly planned, supervised and carried out safely by competent people.
Training Content
The course introduces lifting legislation, responsibilities within the lifting team and the planning that should take place before a load leaves the ground.
Delegates learn to identify common lifting accessories, understand markings and safe working loads, inspect slings, chains, shackles and hooks, select appropriate attachment methods and recognise defects that require equipment to be quarantined.
Practical training covers establishing the load’s weight and centre of gravity, applying sling configurations, controlling loads with tag lines where appropriate, communicating through recognised signals and guiding a load through its full travel and landing sequence.
Candidates are also taught to stop the lift if communication is lost, personnel enter the danger area or any part of the operation differs from the agreed plan.
