First Aid is an important life skill and having a qualified First Aider in the workplace is a legal requirement. The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 outlines that a workplace must provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than five employees and to the self-employed.
What is ‘adequate and appropriate’ will depend on the circumstances in the workplace. This includes whether trained first-aiders are needed, what should be included in a first-aid box and if a first-aid room is required. Employers should carry out an assessment of first-aid needs to determine what to provide.
If you need some help determining what to do for your First Aid Needs Assessment then check out the HSE’s website, where they provide in-depth information on what you should consider when conducting a First Aid Needs Assessment.
What Is A First Aider?
A first aider is someone who will have completed training appropriate to what is needed in their workplace. They will have a certificate of competence in either first aid at work, emergency first aid at work or another equivalent qualification.
Employers can use the findings from their First Aid Needs Assessment to determine the level to which first aiders in their workplace should be trained. Emergency first aid at work training allows a first aider to give emergency first aid to a person who is injured or is taken ill while at work. First aid at work training included the emergency first aid at work course content and also enables the first aider to apply first aid to a number of specific injuries and illness.
ll qualified first aiders must attend a two-day requalification course every three years. Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) also suggests that refresher training taken annually would be beneficial to first aiders and their employers.
Minimum First Aid Provision For A Workplace
The minimum first aid provision for any workplace, outlined by the HSE, is as follows:
- A suitably stocked first aid kit
- An appointed person to take charge of first aid arrangements
- Information for employees about first aid arrangements
It is important to remember that accidents and illness can happen any time, anywhere. Provision for first aid needs to be available at all times people are in the workplace.
