In a medical emergency, your ability to respond quickly and correctly saves lives. When you’re faced with a casualty, the DRSABCD protocol guides you through each critical step, transforming complex emergency responses into clear, manageable actions.
This proven system helps you stay focused under pressure, walking you through each vital check in the right order. DRSABCD (Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, and Defibrillation) is an expansion of the DRABC action plan and serves as your emergency response roadmap from your first approach to a casualty through to delivering potentially life-saving interventions.
Understanding and practising this protocol builds your confidence as a first aider, ensuring you’re ready to act decisively when every second counts.
So, let’s break down each step and explore exactly what you need to do at each stage.
Breaking Down DRSABCD
Let’s walk through each step of this protocol together. Remember, you’ll perform these checks in sequence, with each action building on the information gathered from your previous observations. Your systematic approach here helps you stay calm and focused while gathering vital information.
D: Danger
Before helping others, ensure the scene is safe for you to approach. Check for hazards like fire, gas, electricity, or unsafe structures. Only proceed when you’re confident you won’t become a casualty yourself.
R: Response
Check if your casualty is conscious by gently squeezing their shoulders and asking, “Are you alright?” in both ears. Look for any response – movement, speech, or eye opening. This tells you immediately about their level of consciousness.
S: Send for Help
Call 999 or direct someone specific to make the call. Give clear details about your location, the number of casualties, and the nature of the emergency. Stay on the line – emergency operators provide vital guidance until help arrives.
A: Airway
With your casualty on their back, gently tilt their head and lift their chin. This simple action opens the airway. Check inside their mouth for obvious blockages, but don’t put your fingers in unless you can see a solid object.
B: Breathing
Place your cheek close to their mouth, looking down their chest. Look for chest movement, listen for breathing sounds, and feel for air on your cheek. Take 10 seconds to check – normal breathing is regular, quiet, and effortless.
C: CPR
If they’re not breathing normally, start chest compressions immediately. Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest – aim for 100-120 compressions per minute. Let the chest fully recoil between compressions.
D: Defibrillation
Send someone to fetch your workplace AED if available. These devices provide clear voice instructions and analyse the heart’s rhythm automatically. Early defibrillation, when needed, dramatically improves survival chances.

Putting DRSABCD into Practice
Understanding this protocol transforms how you respond to emergencies, whether you’re facing a colleague who’s collapsed at their desk or helping at a road traffic incident. Your structured approach will keep you focused and effective, even as adrenaline kicks in and others around you panic.
In the workplace, you might use DRSABCD when responding to someone who’s fallen from a height on a construction site or suffered a serious cut in a commercial kitchen. Outside work, these same skills apply when helping an unresponsive family member or assisting with a sports injury. The protocol remains constant. Only the specific hazards and injuries change.
Regular practice helps embed these steps into your memory, making them second nature when needed. Through accredited first aid training, you’ll practice scenarios that build your confidence and competence. You’ll learn to adapt the protocol to different situations while maintaining its systematic approach, ensuring you’re ready to act when someone needs your help.
