Most employers know they need fire marshals. Far fewer could say with confidence how many their premises requires, who currently holds the role, or what those individuals are actually expected to do beyond sweeping the building and standing at the assembly point.
It is one of those responsibilities that gets assigned informally, often to whoever was willing, and then rarely revisited until an inspection or a real evacuation exposes how thin the arrangement is.
Fire marshals, known in many workplaces as fire wardens, are ordinary members of staff trained to take charge during an emergency evacuation. Appointing them is not optional: workplaces are legally obliged to have a sufficient number of trained marshals to handle a fire emergency.

Appointing Fire Marshals In Your Workplace
The duty sits with the responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which governs fire safety in virtually every workplace in England and Wales and applies no matter how few people you employ.
How many marshals count as sufficient depends on your building, your headcount, your shift patterns and the risks specific to your operation, which is why the number is not prescribed for you and has to come out of your own fire risk assessment.
Coverage is the part employers most often get wrong. One trained marshal is no coverage at all once you account for annual leave, sickness, night shifts and split sites, and a marshal who happens to be off on the day of an incident is of no use to anyone.
Most premises need several people trained so the role is always filled, and the individuals chosen should be present regularly, confident enough to direct colleagues under pressure and physically able to carry out a sweep. Understanding what the fire warden role actually demands day to day makes those appointments considerably easier to get right first time.
What Fire Marshal Training Covers Across 16 Modules
At roughly 220 minutes, this is a substantially deeper course than general staff training, and the length reflects how much a marshal is expected to know. The material builds in stages rather than presenting a list of duties.
It begins with the fundamentals every employee needs: the chemistry of fire and how it spreads, the common causes found in workplaces, the safety features designed into buildings and the basic response to discovering a fire.
From there it moves into territory reserved for marshals, covering fire statistics, current fire safety legislation and the workings of a fire risk assessment, which is what allows a marshal to look at their own premises with an informed eye rather than simply following instructions written by someone else.
The middle section turns to prevention and the building itself, examining preventative measures and the safety features a marshal needs to understand in detail, before addressing the role directly: what a fire marshal is responsible for, the action to take on discovering a fire, and how fire drills and evacuations should be planned and run.
The closing modules deal with extinguishers, covering the types available, the assessment a person must make before engaging a fire and the technique for using one. That final module requires a 100% pass, against 70% elsewhere in the course, which reflects the fact that there is no acceptable partial knowledge at the moment someone commits to fighting a fire.
Who Should Complete Fire Marshal Training
Anyone nominated as a fire marshal or warden needs this course, but so do several people who might not carry the title. Supervisors and line managers frequently end up coordinating an evacuation whether or not anyone formally asked them to. Facilities and premises staff, health and safety representatives, and duty managers in hospitality, retail and care settings all occupy positions where the responsibility naturally lands.
Multi-site and multi-floor operations need marshals distributed across the building rather than concentrated in one department, and businesses running shifts need the role covered on every one of them. The training is equally suited to refreshing existing marshals whose knowledge has aged, since evacuation procedures and building layouts change more often than most training records get updated.
Staff outside the role are better served by workplace fire awareness training, which gives the whole workforce a baseline without the depth a marshal requires, and it helps to be clear on how the tiers of fire safety training differ when planning who receives what.
Certification, Duration And Fire Marshal Learning Outcomes
Study is entirely self-paced through our online training courses, so a marshal can work through the 220 minutes across several sittings rather than losing a day in one go. Questions punctuate the modules throughout, and the system requirements are modest: a current browser, up-to-date video drivers, 1GB of RAM or more and a broadband connection of at least 3Mb.
Passing earns a certificate approved by RoSPA and CPD, with additional recognition from IIRSM, Gatehouse Awards and the Institute of Hospitality, giving you documented evidence that your nominated marshals are trained to a recognised standard.
On completion, your fire marshals will be able to:
- Understand how fire develops and the conditions that allow it to spread through a building.
- Apply current fire safety legislation to their own workplace and responsibilities.
- Contribute to fire risk assessment and identify preventative measures on the premises.
- Carry out the fire marshal role during drills and genuine evacuations.
- Take appropriate action on discovering a fire, including raising the alarm and sweeping their area.
- Select and use the correct fire extinguisher, and recognise when tackling a fire is the wrong choice.
