Bruise: A bruise is an injury appearing of discolouration under the skin on the body, caused by impact rupturing underlying blood vessels
Burn: An injury caused when skin Is exposed to heat, flames, chemical agents or electricity
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: This occurs when carbon monoxide builds up in your bloodstream. The body will then replace the oxygen in the blood cells with carbon monoxide, leading to serious tissue damage or even death
Capillary: These are the smallest blood vessels
Cardiac: The medical term relating to the heart
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): An emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve brain function until further measures can be taken
Cardiovascular System: These are the heart and blood vessels that circulate blood around the body
Casualty: The individual who has fallen ill or had an injury
Cerebro-Spinal Fluid: This is the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord
Child: For the purpose of first aid, anyone who is between 1 year old and puberty is considered a child
Circulation: The movement of blood around the body by the heart
Circulatory System: The system that circulates blood through the body
Compression: Increasing physical pressure on a structure. To compress or to squash
Concussion: Concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head
Conscious: To be awake and responsive
Contract: When something tightens or gets smaller
Convulsion: This is a fit or a seizure. During a convulsion, the body will experience sudden, violent, irregular movement of the body caused by involuntary contractions of muscles
Coronary Artery: These are the blood vessels that supply the heart
