In a busy kitchen, food safety is not a policy that sits in a folder, it is something your team gets right or wrong with every plate that leaves the pass. A new starter who does not yet understand how bacteria spread, or why a chilled delivery cannot sit on the back step, is a genuine risk to your customers and your reputation.
Our Level 1 Food Safety Catering course closes that gap from day one, giving kitchen and front-of-house staff a clear grounding in safe food handling before they are let loose on service.
The training is delivered online through our e-learning platform, so you can fit it into induction without losing a shift to a classroom. Approved by RoSPA and CPD, it gives everyone who touches food in your operation, from kitchen porters to waiting staff, the same baseline understanding of how to keep it safe.
What The Catering Food Safety Training Course Teaches
This is introductory food safety training built for hospitality, aimed at people coming into a catering role with little or no background in the subject. It concentrates on awareness rather than technical depth, so your team leaves understanding the risks they handle and the simple habits that keep those risks under control.
The course opens with the food safety legislation that applies to catering businesses and what it means on the ground, then traces food through your kitchen from delivery to service, pointing out where contamination creeps in at each stage. It explains the microorganisms behind food poisoning and how they spread, covers the procedures that bring those risks under control, and finishes on the often-overlooked essentials of pest control and the standards expected of your premises and the people working in them.
Why Catering Businesses Cannot Skip Food Safety Training
Every catering business and the people it employs share a legal duty to serve food that is safe to eat, with the obligations written into UK and retained EU law. Get it wrong and the consequences are severe, from a customer falling ill to a failed inspection, a damaged hygiene rating, or worse. In hospitality those outcomes travel fast, because one bad experience shared online can undo years of careful reputation building.
Training is how you protect against that. When your staff understand why food safety rules exist, they follow them instinctively under pressure rather than cutting corners during a rush. This course suits new hires with little experience, waiting and counter staff handling wrapped or low-risk items, and back-of-house team members such as kitchen porters who still need to grasp the basics.
For you as an employer, it is straightforward proof that your people were trained properly before they started.
What Your Kitchen Team Will Be Able To Do
By the end of the course, your staff will understand the core principles of food safety in a catering setting and where their own responsibilities lie. The training is shaped around five clear outcomes, so each learner finishes able to:
- Identify the key legislation involved with food safety and how it applies to the workplace.
- Recognise the hazards that can occur from delivery through to service of food, and how to contain them.
- Understand the nature of microorganisms and their link to foodborne illnesses and food poisoning.
- State the safety procedures that help control risk in the catering environment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of effective pest control.
The course takes around 50 minutes of online content and is worked through at each learner’s own pace, with questions built in so understanding is checked as they go. It carries approval from RoSPA and CPD, and all anyone needs to take part is a current web browser and a standard broadband connection. Worth noting is that this is Level 1 in terms of knowledge depth, intended as awareness training rather than a formal regulated qualification.
