Anyone whose business involves making or handling food carries a legal duty to keep that food safe, and the people on your production line are where that duty is met or missed every single day. A worker who understands how contamination happens, and how to stop it, is your first line of defence against a problem that can be expensive at best and dangerous at worst.
Our Level 1 Food Safety Manufacturing course gives your staff that grounding, introducing the essentials of safe food handling in a manufacturing setting through short, accessible online training.
Delivered through our e-learning platform, the course is built for induction, letting you bring new team members up to a consistent standard quickly and without pulling them off the floor for a classroom day. It is approved by RoSPA and CPD, and it gives employees the awareness they need to play their part in your wider food safety system.
What Level 1 Food Safety Manufacturing Training Covers
This is introductory food safety training aimed at people with little or no prior knowledge, designed to give them a clear awareness of the risks involved in handling food and the part they play in controlling them. It is pitched at staff working with low-risk or wrapped foods and those in supporting roles, so the content focuses on practical awareness rather than technical detail.
The training works through the food safety legislation that applies to manufacturers and what it means in practice, then follows food through the operation to show where hazards arise from delivery all the way to service.
Along the way it explains how contamination occurs, looks at the microorganisms behind foodborne illness and food poisoning, and sets out the controls that keep risk in check, including the importance of effective pest control and the standards expected around premises and people.
Why Food Manufacturers Need Their Staff Trained
Food handlers and their employers share a legal responsibility to manage food safety, with obligations set out across UK and retained EU law.
Those laws are clear that food prepared, processed or sold must be safe to eat, and a single lapse on the line can lead to contaminated product reaching customers with serious consequences. Training is how you turn that legal obligation into something your workforce actually understands and acts on.
For an employer, the value is straightforward. Staff who recognise the dangers of poor food safety are far less likely to cause the mistakes that lead to recalls, complaints or enforcement action, and you hold clear evidence that your people have been trained as part of their induction.
The course suits new employees with minimal experience, those handling wrapped or low-risk products, and warehouse or support staff who still need to understand the basics of working safely around food.
What Your Team Will Gain From The Course
By the end of the training, your employees will understand the fundamentals of food safety in a manufacturing environment and their own responsibilities within it. The course is structured around five clear outcomes, so learners finish able to:
- Identify the key legislation involved with food safety and how it applies to the food manufacturing workplace.
- Recognise the hazards that can occur from delivery through to service of food, and how to contain them.
- Understand the nature of microorganisms and their link to foodborne illnesses and food poisoning.
- State the safety procedures that help control risk in the working environment.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of effective pest control.
The course runs to around 50 minutes of online content and is studied at the learner’s own pace, with questions along the way so understanding is checked as they work through each part.
It is approved by RoSPA and the CPD scheme, and all your team need to take part is an up-to-date browser and a standard broadband connection. It is worth noting that this is Level 1 in terms of the depth of knowledge covered and is intended as awareness training rather than a formal regulated qualification.

Train Your Food Safety Team With TL Training
Building food safety awareness into your induction process is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to protect your customers, your product and your reputation. This short online course makes that easy to roll out across new starters and existing staff alike, with recognised RoSPA and CPD approval behind it. You can enrol your team on the course here, or talk to us about training several employees together.
If your operation spans more than one type of food business, the same introductory training is available tailored to other settings, including Level 1 food safety for catering and Level 1 food safety for retail. For staff handling higher-risk foods or taking on more responsibility, Level 2 food safety for manufacturing is the natural next step.
