Refresher Course for Overhead Gantry Crane Training
A trained crane operator does not stay sharp forever. Skills drift, bad habits creep in, and certification has a shelf life, which is why even your most experienced overhead gantry crane operators need periodic refresher training to keep them safe and compliant.
Our overhead gantry crane refresher course brings experienced operators back up to standard, revalidating their skills and renewing their certification to the same RTITB benchmark, delivered by a qualified instructor at your own site.
Refresher training is not about starting over. It is about confirming that operators who already know their way around a gantry crane are still working to the correct standard, correcting anything that has slipped, and giving you fresh documented proof of competence. Because it takes place on your premises using your own cranes, the assessment reflects exactly how your operators work in practice.

Who The Overhead Gantry Crane Refresher Course Is Designed For
This course is specifically for operators who already have experience on overhead gantry cranes, not newcomers. TL Training defines a refresher candidate as someone who has previously operated this type of crane and can provide documentary evidence of earlier formal training, so it is worth having those records to hand when you book.
It is the right choice in several common situations: when an operator’s existing certification is approaching expiry and needs renewing, when someone has been away from crane duties for a while and needs to rebuild confidence, or when a refresh is prompted by a near miss, a change in site procedures, or simply your own commitment to keeping standards high.
If an operator has no formal training history to evidence, the novice route is the better fit, and we are happy to advise if you are unsure which applies.

What The Refresher Training Revisits
The course works through the same core competencies expected of any competent gantry crane operator, but at a pace suited to people who already have the fundamentals, focusing on reinforcement and correction rather than first-time instruction.
It covers operation using both pendant control, where the unit is attached to the crane and held at ground level, and remote control, which frees the operator to position themselves wherever the lift is best managed.
Across the session, instructors revisit and reassess the essentials of safe operation, including:
- Confident, accurate use of the crane controls
- Smooth operation of the crane in all four directions
- Controlling and reducing hook swing
- Carrying out a proper pre-use inspection
- Correct signalling protocols
- Sound slinging techniques

Why Ongoing Crane Training Protects Your Business
Keeping operator training current is not just good practice, it is part of how you meet your ongoing duty to ensure staff remain competent to use lifting equipment safely. Skills fade with time and routine breeds complacency, and an experienced operator cutting corners on hook control or skipping a pre-use check can cause just as serious an incident as an untrained one. Regular refreshers are how you guard against that drift.
There is a clear commercial case too. Up-to-date certification keeps you ready for audits and insurance requirements, demonstrates a visible commitment to safety, and reduces the risk of costly accidents, downtime and damage. For the operators themselves, a refresher is reassurance that they are still working to the standard expected of them, which supports both confidence and morale on the floor.

Book A Crane Refresher Around Your Schedule
Renewing your operators’ skills and certification is a small investment against the cost of a single avoidable incident, and our instructor-led refresher course is built to slot into your operation with minimal disruption.
Training runs for up to three delegates at a time, with the number of days depending on how many operators you are putting through, and it all happens on your site. To arrange a date or talk through your operators’ renewal needs, tell us what you are looking for and we will take care of the rest.
If any of your team are completely new to gantry cranes, they will need the novice overhead gantry crane course instead, and you can compare both options on our main overhead crane training page. You may also be interested in our MEWP training, lorry-mounted crane training, or telescopic handler training alongside booking in your crane refreshers.
