Qualified telehandler operators with no prior hook experience work through the full N138 syllabus across one to two days. Training starts with the regulatory framework and the specific hazards of suspended work before moving into practical exercises covering pre-lift planning, sling selection, load control, and travelling with a suspended load under realistic site conditions.
Refresher for Current Suspended Load Operators (1 Day)
Operators already running suspended loads regularly complete a single-day refresher that focuses on reassessment rather than fresh instruction. The session revisits core theory, checks current technique against NPORS standards, and closes with formal assessment. Teams running joint NPORS renewals across their lifting and plant tickets often schedule N138 refreshers back-to-back with N010 or Slinger/Signaller ticket renewals to keep disruption contained.
What the NPORS N138 Course Covers
Training happens on your telehandler with your hook or jib attachment, which matters because lifting behaviour varies noticeably between machines and configurations. An operator trained on a fixed hook on a 7-metre machine who then has to use a fly jib on a larger unit is working with different load charts, different reach envelopes, and different swing characteristics, and none of that transfers cleanly from one to the other.
By assessment, delegates can assess and prepare a suspended load, select and inspect the correct lifting accessories, calculate weight and centre of gravity for typical loads, communicate with a slinger or signaller using standard signals, lift and travel with a suspended load while controlling swing, and respond appropriately when instability develops during a lift.
