What Are the Different Types of Liverpool HGV/LGV Training?

As with all career choices, opting to become a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) or Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) driver is a big decision. If you’re based in the Liverpool area, the best way to start your career is with HGV/LGV training.

Over the years, the demand for HGV/LGV transportation has increased steadily. The pandemic has led to a boom in the e-commerce industry, creating an even greater need for trained and licensed HGV/LGV drivers. More industries need people to transport goods from warehouses to their customers. As an HGV/LGV driver, you can enjoy long-term job security, career progression, and a good salary.

Unlike most 9-5 jobs, a career as an HGV/LGV gives you the freedom to travel and see different places. You also have flexibility regarding the routes and distances you drive, allowing you to shape a career around your preferred lifestyle.

So which HGV/LGV training course is right for you? Below we discuss the different types of HGV and LGV training courses in Liverpool to help you start your career.

What are the Different HGV/LGV Training Courses in Liverpool?

The training course you choose will depend on the type of vehicle you want to drive. To enrol in an HGV/LGV training course, you must be 18 years old or older and have a full category B driving license. Our courses prepare you for an LGV Category C1, C, or C+E license, which would allow you to drive vehicles of 7.5 tonnes or more.

Category C1

The Category C1 training course is designed to give prospective ambulance, horseboxes, delivery trucks, and home removal truck drivers the skills to drive safely and efficiently.

The testing you require will depend on the year you passed your driver’s license test. If you passed your driver’s license test before 1st January 1997, you would be entitled to drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes and would have to complete your Driver CPC qualification. To maintain your CPC qualification, you would have to complete 35 hours of training every five years.

If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997, you must pass a practical driving test, which would allow you to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. Before applying for your C1 license, you would also have to pass driver medical examinations and theoretical tests.

Category C

The Category C training course aims to teach prospective drivers how to operate 7.5 tonnes to 32 tonnes vehicles safely. Once completed, you will be able to drive large vehicles without trailers, such as fire engines, roadside recovery vehicles, and home and commercial removal vehicles.

Category C+E

Once you have successfully completed your Category C training course, your license will be updated to allow you to begin your C+E training. The Category C+E training course is aimed at drivers who operate vehicles up to 44 tonnes, such as articulated lorries. You can only enrol for the course if you have your Category C license.

Category C1+E

The Category C1+E training course can only be completed by license holders who have passed the C1 test. After completing the course, you will be able to operate a 7.5-tonne vehicle with a trailer.
