Every lifting operation needs someone with the authority and competence to plan it properly.
The Appointed Person is that individual, responsible for ensuring lifts happen safely, legally, and without the costly failures that occur when planning falls short. Without this role filled by someone who genuinely understands crane selection, load calculations, and the regulatory framework, even routine lifts carry unnecessary risk.
TL Training delivers NPORS Appointed Person (N401) training at your premises anywhere in the UK. Your candidates learn using your lifting equipment and site conditions, which means the planning exercises they complete during training reflect the actual operations they will manage once certified. On successful completion, delegates receive an NPORS N401 card recognised across construction, engineering, and industrial sectors.
What the Appointed Person Role Involves
The Appointed Person sits at the centre of lifting operations planning under BS7121 and LOLER regulations. This is not a supervisory role in the sense of watching others work. It is a planning and management function that determines how lifts will be conducted before any equipment leaves the ground.
The responsibilities include assessing each lifting operation, selecting appropriate cranes and lifting accessories, calculating loads and capacities, producing risk assessments and method statements, and communicating the plan to everyone involved. When lifts go wrong, investigators look first at the planning. The Appointed Person’s documentation and decisions form the foundation that everything else rests upon, which is why this training covers both theoretical knowledge and practical application in depth.
How the Appointed Person Training Is Structured
The NPORS N401 course adapts to your candidates’ existing experience rather than forcing everyone through identical content. This structure keeps training efficient while ensuring every delegate reaches the competence standard the qualification demands.
Novice Training for Those New to Lift Planning
Candidates with little or no experience in planning or supervising lifting operations complete a five-day programme covering the full syllabus. This includes legislation under LOLER, PUWER, and HASAWA, crane types and their limitations, load calculations, ground bearing pressures, method statement development, and practical lift planning exercises. The extended duration allows time to build understanding from fundamentals rather than assuming prior knowledge.
Experienced Operator Pathway
Delegates who already hold roles such as Crane Supervisor or Slinger/Signaller, or who have substantial site management experience involving lifting operations, can complete the qualification in three days. This pathway recognises existing competence while focusing on the specific planning and documentation responsibilities that distinguish the Appointed Person role from other positions in the lifting team.
Refresher Training for Existing Cardholders
Those holding current or recently expired NPORS N401 cards can renew through a one or two day refresher course. The duration depends on how recently the candidate has been actively involved in lift planning and whether significant changes to standards or legislation have occurred since their last training. Evidence of ongoing practical involvement, such as recent lift plans or employer references, supports the shorter refresher option.
What Your Candidates Will Learn
The syllabus covers everything an Appointed Person needs to plan and manage lifting operations that satisfy both regulatory requirements and practical operational demands. Training takes place at your site using your equipment, which means the scenarios candidates work through during practical exercises connect directly to their actual working environment.
Delegates leave the course able to assess lifting operations and select appropriate methods, create compliant risk assessments and method statements, calculate loads and safe working limits accurately, and communicate plans effectively to crane operators, slinger/signallers, and other personnel. The course includes both theory assessment and practical exercises that test application of knowledge rather than just recall.
Key syllabus areas include:
- Legislation covering LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA, and BS7121
- Crane types, configurations, and load chart interpretation
- Lifting accessories, their selection and inspection requirements
- Risk assessment and method statement development
- Load calculations including ground bearing pressures
- Lifting team roles and communication protocols
