It also explains why condition and disturbance are central to risk: asbestos left intact and properly managed is very different from material being drilled or broken.
Learners are shown the steps to take if they discover or accidentally disturb suspected asbestos. Work should stop, the area should be isolated, access restricted and the incident reported through the employer’s procedures. They should not sweep, vacuum or attempt to clean contaminated dust using ordinary equipment.
The Duty to Manage Asbestos
Those responsible for non-domestic premises have a duty to identify and manage asbestos risks. Employees should be given access to relevant asbestos registers or survey information before intrusive work begins, but awareness training remains essential because plans can be incomplete and materials may not be obvious.
For Cardiff employers using contractors, clear communication is equally important. Contractors should be told about known asbestos and should confirm what checks have been completed before starting work.
