Mental Health First Aid Course Derby
Awareness around mental health has improved significantly in recent years. More people are opening up about their experiences, and conversations that were once avoided are now becoming part of everyday life.
Despite this progress, many individuals still struggle in silence and are unsure where to seek support. Research from organisations such as Samaritans highlights ongoing concerns around rising suicide rates, while studies from The Children’s Society continue to show the scale of mental health challenges among young people.
This is where Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training plays an important role.

What Is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is a globally recognised training programme designed to help individuals identify the early signs of mental ill health and respond appropriately. Much like physical first aid, the aim is not to diagnose, but to provide initial support and guide someone towards professional help where needed.
At TL Training, we deliver Mental Health First Aid courses in Derby and the surrounding areas, supporting both businesses and individuals. The course equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to recognise when someone may be struggling and to respond in a supportive, practical way.

How the Course Is Structured
The training is delivered across four structured sessions, combining interactive exercises, group discussions, and guided learning.
Session 1: Understanding Mental Health
This session introduces the concept of mental health and explores the MHFA action plan. It also covers depression, including common symptoms and contributing factors.
Session 2: Responding to Crisis Situations
You will look at sensitive but important topics such as suicide, substance misuse, and how to provide initial support. The session also develops non-judgemental listening skills.
Session 3: Anxiety and Related Conditions
This part of the course focuses on anxiety disorders, helping you recognise warning signs and understand appropriate responses. It also covers self-harm, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
Session 4: Severe Mental Health Conditions
The final session explores conditions such as psychosis, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, including treatment options and recovery approaches.

What You Will Gain
By the end of the course, participants will have a solid understanding of mental health issues and how to respond effectively in a range of situations. You will also receive:
- A comprehensive course manual
- A mental health workbook
- An accredited certificate of completion
