Firstly, it is important to know that there is no difference between LGV training and HGV training. HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) is the term usually used in Britain, and LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) usually in Europe.
Why HGV/LGV?
The transport industry is constantly thriving and businesses are always seeking employees. This job would be ideal for someone seeking something slightly different to the usual 9-5 Monday to Friday role. Many companies offer the ability to climb the career ladder after gaining experience as well as job stability and a competitive salary. As well as this, you will also get the chance to travel to many different parts of the country.

We run the following LGV & HGV training courses in Deeside:
Category C1
This qualification allows you to drive a vehicle of 3.5 tonnes – 7.5 tonnes, with or without a trailer of 750 KG. The duration of this course is 4 days. Please note, if you passed your driving test (car) before January 1997, you will have acquired rights, which means you are already entitled to drive such vehicles. If you wish to drive professionally you will need a Driver CPC qualification. This involves attending courses on various aspects of professional driving. If you passed your driving test after January 1997 you will not have acquired rights. In this case, you require the relevant theoretical and practical training and need to pass the relevant exams. You must be 18 or over to attend this course.
Category C
This is the most popular HGV license in the UK. The average Category C vehicle is an 18 tonne rigid. Once you have passed your Category C your license will be upgraded with the C + E provisional entitlement allowing you to train to drive C + E (articulated vehicle) if required. The course duration is 4 days and candidates must be 18 or over.
Category C + E
These are vehicles over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750 KG. This vehicle is also sometimes referred to as an Artic or Class 1. This is the largest vehicle you can drive within the industry. C + E drivers can start on a salary of around £32,000 per year. Once you have gained your Cat C entitlement, you can begin this training. You will not be required to repeat your Driver CPC Part 1 Theory test as you will have completed them when you undertook your Cat C training. If you haven’t already completed your CPC Part 2 and 4 training, you will need to complete this in order to drive professionally. Candidates must be 18 of over.
Category C1 + E
These are vehicles 3.5 tonnes – 7.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750 KG. If you’ve already gained your Cat C1 license and you wish to tow a larger trailer, then you should sit the Cat C1+E course. The license will allow you up to 8.25 tonnes pupping power in total. The course duration is 4 days and candidates must be 18 or over.
Module 4 DCPC Practical Safety Demonstration
This course will be carried out by a TL Training registered DSA examiner. You will be required to demonstrate competence when carrying out a number of security checks on your vehicle. You will be observed by an examiner. You are able to bring your own suitable vehicle (C1/C/C+E/D1 or D) with you to the test. You will be required to show your driving license and module 2 certificates.
Yard Shunter
Aims to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries on site by teaching drivers to carry out safe manoeuvres and respond to the recommended code of signals. You will be required to carry out manoeuvres such as reversing, trailer coupling and uncoupling and be aware of the company’s safety procedures.
